Edit Inline in Lightning Experience

Reps can now edit individual fields on a record details tab and easily edit multiple fields at one time. What’s more: Users are warned if they try to navigate away before saving a record. No more lost edits!
Available in: Group, Professional, Enterprise, Performance, Unlimited, and Developer Editions

Inline editing is fast and easy. When you double-click a field or click the edit icon pencil next to it, the entire record opens in edit mode. Reps can breeze through the record and update several fields at once. It’s more tedious in Salesforce Classic—you have to double-click each field to open it for editing.

Here are a few more advantages to inline editing in Lightning Experience.

  • Reps can navigate within the page while editing a record. They can switch to the record’s chatter feed and back without losing changes.
  • Reps are warned if they try to navigate to another page or browser tab without saving changes. No more redoing edits when they close the browser tab or browser by mistake.
  • Error messages are more compact and easily accessible. Instead of appearing at the top of the form, error messages appear in a window at the bottom. Reps can click error message icon to hide the window when scrolling through a long record.

Note

Note

Inline editing is automatically enabled in Lightning Experience by default. This permission can cause any Visualforce objects, formula fields, and Summary roll-up fields you’ve created to appear on the Create, Edit, or Clone Pages. If you see these fields on these pages but haven’t configured them to work on these pages, contact Salesforce for help disabling the “SFX Inline Edit” permission. You can then edit your record by clicking the Edit button.

Note

Note

Right now, inline editing works only when editing record details. Soon, it’ll be available in the Highlights panel and list views.
