Consciously Uncoupling: Libraries and Content

Libraries are joining the Files family, and Salesforce CRM Content is no longer required to access Libraries. Previously, Content and Libraries were a power couple who worked together to let you upload, organize, and share your files. Now you no longer need Content to get the benefits of Libraries. In Lightning Experience, you can make libraries available to all users or a subset of users without assigning them Salesforce CRM Content licenses. In Salesforce Classic, users without Content licenses can now view libraries and access files from libraries. This change applies to both Lightning Experience and Salesforce Classic.
Keep Content enabled for your org so that admins and library managers can continue to create and maintain libraries in Salesforce Classic.

Libraries and library memberships can now be created and managed from the API.

Settings for Libraries without Content are available in two places in Setup. Both options are enabled by default.
  • To control global access, from Setup, enter General Settings in the Quick Find box, then select General Settings. Select Libraries in Salesforce Files.
  • To enable or disable libraries for a subset of users, use the Access Libraries permission, available for profiles and permission sets on most standard user licenses.
Libraries and Content remain unavailable for users with High Volume Customer Portal, Customer Community, and Chatter Free licenses.
