Converse with Your Data (Beta)

Ask data questions using non-technical language, and view answers in automatically configured charts. Start with a common word or two, and Analytics provides relevant suggestions that you can accept or edit. Guided conversations reduce the number of clicks needed to explore data, and setting up queries is easier.

To enable the feature, go to the Analytics Settings page in Setup, and select Enable Conversational Exploration (Beta). Conversations are then available in dashboards running in apps, explorer, and dashboard designer.

Start a conversation by clicking Icon for conversational exploration (a compass). When you click the text box, you’re prompted with suggestions based on the fields in your dataset(s). To see which datasets are open for conversational exploration, look for the purple hexagons.

Narrow in on your question by typing the name of a measure field in your dataset. As you type, Analytics provides guidance relevant to your data. Click a suggestion to see a table or chart.

Analytics generates a chart to answer your question in the text field

When you’re using conversational exploration in the explorer, click Fields to view the available fields to ask about. If you’re in the dashboard designer or a running app, and the suggestions don’t include the words you expect, click Add Dataset to expand your exploration.

When you have the chart that answers your question, open the dropdown menu. Depending on the context, you can save the visualization as a lens, share it, clip it to the designer, or continue your data exploration.

Take the following into consideration.
  • Conversational exploration requires the Analytics Platform permission set license. It’s not available in embedded dashboards, mobile apps, Analytics for Communities, or standalone Analytics apps, such as the Sales Analytics app.
  • Conversational exploration is available only in the dashboard designer, explorer, and dashboards running in an app.
  • Advanced functions aren’t supported in conversational exploration.

The Spring ’18 release contains a beta version of the conversational exploration feature, which means it’s a high-quality feature with known limitations. This feature isn’t generally available unless or until Salesforce announces its general availability in documentation or in press releases or public statements. We can’t guarantee general availability within any particular time frame or at all. Make your purchase decisions only based on generally available products and features. You can provide feedback and suggestions for this feature in the IdeaExchange.
